A jammed garbage disposal can prevent food waste from being processed effectively. Follow these steps to diagnose and resolve the issue.
Step 1: Initial Diagnosis
- The disposal hums but doesn’t grind.
- The disposal is silent when switched on.
Tools You Might Need:
- Allen wrench (usually supplied with the disposal)
- Flashlight
- Tongs or pliers
Troubleshooting Steps
1. Turn Off Power
- Switch off the disposal and either unplug it or turn off the circuit breaker to ensure safety.
2. Remove Visible Obstructions
- Caution: Never put your hand inside the disposal.
- Use tongs or pliers to carefully remove any visible debris or food that may be causing the jam.
3. Manually Rotate Blades
- Insert the Allen wrench into the hole at the bottom center of the disposal unit.
- Turn the wrench back and forth to free any jams.
4. Press Reset Button
- Locate and press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal unit. This will reset the motor.
5. Restore Power and Test
- Plug the disposal back in or turn on the circuit breaker.
- Run water and turn on the disposal to see if it operates correctly.

- The disposal remains jammed after following these steps.
- You hear unusual noises during operation.
